With reference to your letter of the 15th in-

stant No.15949/15 respecting the proposed contribu-

tion of the Hong Kong Government towards the cost of

the establishment of & Registry of Companies in

Shanghai, I am directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to

say that he has had under consideration various pro-

posals to provide for the working of the new Registry

and these proposals, as far as remuneration is con-

cerned, have been measured by the estimated cost to

the Colonial Government of maintaining a registry at

Shanghai. As such a registry would be subordinate to

the Hong Kong Registry, it was assumed that it would

be served by a deputy registrar only, whose salary

might be estimated at not less than six hundred pounds

a year with an allowance for quarters of one hundred

pounds a year, and some additional allowance to pro-
